In the first half of 2003, U.S. consumers spent $214 million on online dating service sites. That’s up by 75 per cent from the same period in 2002.

- Online daters are more likely to be male, single, divorced, employed in the paid labor force, urban and have a higher income.For every woman using online dating service, there are more than 2 men.
- About 55 per cent of online daters earn $40,000 a year or more.
- Most online daters are in their 30s. More than half of online daters are college graduates or have some college education.
- Most people use online internet dating services mainly to find dates and establish a long-term relationship - not to flirt online, find a marriage partner or a sexual partner.
- Nearly 50% of online daters have met 1 to 5 others for offline dates. An additional 20% have physically dated more than 5 people they have met online.

- Career and time pressures are increasing
- Today’s singles people are more mobile. Also, a growing number of jobs require frequent travel making it difficult to meet a potential partner
- Workplace romance is on the decline due to growing sensitivity about sexual harassment in the workplace
